Star Trek Model Kits: Boldly Going… Again!

trek-tattooThe new “Star Trek” film showed it’s box office muscle this past weekend, surpassing industry expectations by bringing in over 75.2 million in domestic ticket sales – that’s the biggest opening for a Trek movie, like, ever. So – that said, it looks like Trek is going to keep on Trekkin’ for quite a while. (And, hopefully, so will our Star Trek model kits!)

How cool is it that Star Trek is part of the general public’s consciousness again? Paramount has done a stellar job of marketing the new Trek flick, and that’s bound to have a positive effect on all Trek-related merchandise, classic Trek or “new” Trek. Interest in our Star Trek kits seems to be pretty high, and the positive buzz surrounding the new film should help further interest.

Stop by our booth at WonderFest this weekend to see what we have planned for Trek the rest of the year. Let us know what you want to see from us – both classic re-releases and new kits. Fill out one of our questionnaires and get a cool freebie that you can use to show off your Trek pride. (Don’t worry – our tattoos aren’t permanent!)

How cool is it? TOO COOL FOR WORDS. I love the tattoo, btw. I’ll bet the movie will be #1 again this weekend, beating that silly Tom Hanks thing.

If it does, does that mean we get our new Enterprise kit? 🙂

The tattoo is very funny! “Mother ship”! Heh heh heh! Glad it’s not permanent though!

Hey Bob, is that you muscling up there? 😀

  3. BobP says:

We seem to be getting a lot of requests for that new Enterprise!

I think the tattoo is fun, too. The licensor is great about giving us flexibility to do things like this. There’s also another really cool tattoo that our web master, Andy, illustrated. I’ll post that image soon, probably after we get back from WonderFest.

Is that me muscling up there? Are you kidding? (I wish!) That tattoo will probably wrap twice around my little T-Rex arms. On the other hand, there’s plenty of room on my ample mid-section. Maybe I could apply it next to my belly button, and it will look like the Enterprise is being sucked into a big black hole. (No Uranus jokes, please.)

  4. JamieH says:

    Ha ha. You said “hole”.

  5. eimb1999 says:

No Uranus jokes eh? well, do I have to bring up that old joke? Hey I bet some people haven’t heard it… What do Toilet Paper and the Starship Enterprise have in common? They both orbit Uranus and wipe out Klingons…

    OOOOOHHH!!!!!

Yeah, it’s a groaner, and maybe a bit sick as well as childish, but, well, it’s relevant and a classic!

I was looking for a kit of the new movie Enterprise to be done too.
i was expecting it to be 1/1000 scale and about the same size of the NCC-1701-A
since it seem to use the same saucer and weapons design. I thought it was about like this picture i found. http://www.treksinscifi.com/trekdaily/?p=713
Seemed about right to me. But i heard it mentioned that the size opened your mind to a 1/2500 scale and i had to wonder if JJ made it worse than i thought.
I keep running into talk like this chart.
    http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=254526&highlight=ncc-1701+movie+scale
My god, really? Tell me JJ did not make her 700+ meters long.
The NCC-1701 should not be bigger than the NCC-1701-D in my opinion.
I do like the 1/1000 scale round 2 is doing. I was never a big fan of 1/2500 i feel it is to small for detail work like windows. Would love to see the movie enterprise kit about the same size as the enterprise A. (see 1st link)
I did like the new movie. It was great overall. But i do not really care for them make such large changes to a ship i grew up watching.
By the way i just got my 1/1000 tos NCC-1701 , great kit , love the options.
Only thing i would have like different… windows on the kit instead of on the decals. And maybe a optional open shuttle bay. But i here this is being done on the 1/350 scale. My friend already ordered his 1/350 A. Personally i
feel 1/350 scale is a bit big for my open model space. Don’t worry i will make room for a 1/1000 scale NCC-1701-D & E 🙂 Think i got a bit off topic. sorry to make this so long.

    Hi James,

My gosh, yes — JJ did make the ship that big. According to our (very reliable) source, the “actual” size of the ship is 2379.75 feet long. It’s a whopper. A 1/2500-scale kit would put the assembled model at about 11.5″ inches long, which is just right for standard size packaging.

I also would love a 1/1000-scale kit of the NuE, which would put the finished ship at about 28″ long. Unfortunately, a limited tooling budget will only go so far. HOWEVER, if the 1/2500 scale kit is successful, no doubt it helps to open the door for a larger kit down the road, maybe in time for the inevitable sequel?

As far as windows on the 1/1000 TOS Enterprise: we wanted to do windows (with clear inserts) on the 1:1000 Enterprise-A/Refit that is currently under development — the factory told us the size is too small to mold the kit with windows that small. So — I assume the same issue applied to the small TOS Enterprise when it was originally developed several years ago. However, I am sure that a resourceful modeler with a steady hand and a micro-drill could probably find a way to make “real” windows in the thing.

The windows and docking hatches do not look like they match for that size….but ok….1/2500 scale kit would be about 11.5 inches..hum.
your NCC-1701 kit is about that size built…. Yea i think a 1/2500 scale of that size would make everyone happy. It would go well with the old 3 piece kits, or go well sitting between your 1/1000 tos and refit Enterprises kits.
For those of us who don’t buy the triple sized version. Sad that they did the characters so well they messed up the biggest star of the film. The Enterprise herself. Keep up the great work over there. 🙂 Can’t wait for the 1/1000 refit. guessing it will have markings for either 1701 or 1701-A? I have not seen my friend’s 1/350 refit kit yet.

I for one do not like to look of the new E and so will not build it, but I love the Kelvin. The bigger the better!

I don’t suppose these tattoos are available any more. I’d really like to get one if at all possible.

  11. BobP says:

Glad you like the tattoos; those were used as incentives to get folks to fill out our survey at WonderFest. We still have a few of those left, though, so I’ll make an offer — send me a self-addressed, stamped envelope and I’ll see that you get one of each. Here’s the mailing address:

    Bob Plant
    Round 2 LLC
    4073 Meghan Beeler Court
    South Bend, IN 46628

I’ve got several dozen left from WonderFest; so if anyone else is interested as well, I’ll be glad to fulfill requests, as long as I’m provided with the all-important SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope). We’ll be giving some of these away at iHobby in October as well.

    Bob
