Star Trek Model Kits: Another Bird Has Landed (well, maybe not “landed” so much as grown legs)…

One of our most exciting Star Trek model kit projects in development is also one of the most difficult ones to show off. I received test shots of the metal legs that will be included in our upcoming release of the Klingon Bird of Prey.

The legs are metal to help support the weight of the kit. Styrene would have probably bent or broken. We had “Crazy” Ed Holt (modelnutz on the forums) finish up his versions of the landing gear and with a few minor adjustments, had them tooled up. I’m still waiting to see the plastic parts but I couldn’t help but share this when it came in today.

(BTW, this is blog post #50. I think I just dislocated my shoulder patting myself on the back.)

Making them from metal is a fabulous idea! Are they slightly adjustable or positionable so that the model can sit a little higher than shown in the pix? Seems to me on the show in Trek 3 when it’s landing, the gear “hung down” a bit further than that.

Nice work, though! Can’t wait to build it! What an excellent mod for an already great kit! (There may be some rivet-counters out there who might disagree with me but I think that KBOP is probably the most accurate Trek kit Ertl ever made….)

I love it! I also would like to see more multi media kits from polar lights.

Very cool idea. Having built one of the AMT versions years ago, this really makes the kit worth buying and building all over again. I’m thinking a diorama of some sort also. Thanks Round 2 🙂

Is this a reissue or an all new 1/350 kit?

It looks extremely detailed so I’m guessing a 1/350 Klingon Bird of Prey.

  5. JamieH says:

This is a reissue of the AMT kit. The ship as seen in the movies and Next Gen show changed sizes from scene to scene. Many modelers have speculated the scale to be very close to 1:350 scale based on the amount of crew members and comparing the size of the ship to the Enterprise while they are onscreen together in Star Trek 3. “Close” is close enough for us in this case.

  6. Arronax says:

Will the kit include the “H.M.S. Bounty” that McCoy painted on at the start of Star Trek IV?

  7. master jedi mike says:

Why would it? You could paint that on.

  8. JamieH says:

It isn’t included because a belly (for lack of a better term) was added to the filming model in ST:IV. That’s where they painted it on. Check out Trekcore.com and compare for yourself.
